This interactive game is about town planning in Britain during the Industrial Revolution. It focuses on towns that have experienced rapid growth due to industrialisation but which have poor air quality and no efficient sewage disposal. Students assume the role of advisor to a town councillor who wants to improve the health of the workforce and provide them with better living conditions. Some improvements in hygiene and housing cost a lot of money, which Victorian English people will not readily pay.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This interactive game is a useful student resource for the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 9 about the experiences of men, women and children during the Industrial Revolution. Students learn about the rapid growth of towns, as people flocked from the country seeking jobs, without any provision for sanitation, adequate housing or wages.
  • This resource develops students' knowledge about the effects on workers of the modernisation of industries. In the new factories women and children were more employable than men as they cost less and were easier to train, and the introduction of steam power made handloom weavers unable to compete for work with the factories.
  • The resource is useful for the development of historical skills. Students select and use information as evidence for an historical argument about the benefits industrialisation.
