Educational value
  • This resource is useful for supporting the Australian Curriculum:History content description in year 9 relating to population movements from the late 18th century. It addresses the question of why increasing numbers of people left rural areas for towns or overseas destinations. It examines three examples of departures from the countryside, concluding that there were a complex variety of factors behind each decision. However, limited economic opportunities in the country and the attractions of the cities or colonies underlay each case.
  • This resource is useful for the development of the historical skill of analysing and using sources. Students select information from the resource and use the relevant parts as evidence to construct an argument about why so many people left rural areas in Britain over the last two centuries.
