Students follow a trail on the map, which leads them to the topics: How the slave trade worked; Resistance and abolition; Return to Sierra Leone; Olaudah Equiano's adventures; and Facts and figures.

Educational value
  • This interactive map is a useful student resource for the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 9 about the transatlantic slave trade and convict transportation resulting from the Industrial Revolution. Students use the map to discover the extent of British involvement in the slave trade, and the benefits of slavery to financiers, captains of slave ships, businessmen and slave owners.
  • This resource is useful for a study of the long struggle for the abolition of slavery in Great Britain. Students investigate the struggle in terms of those who fought for the abolition of slavery and those who opposed it, analysing the arguments of both sides.
  • It is useful for the development of historical skills. Students select and use information as evidence for an historical argument in a class debate about slavery.
