  • This resource is useful for supporting the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 9 relating to the role of an individual or group in the promotion of Chartism, and the responses to it from landowners. It explains the role of the popular leader and member of parliament Feargus O'Connor, who presented the third petition of Chartist demands to parliament in 1848. It shows that the propertied classes were hostile to the Chartists and tried to ensure the campaign and petition were seen as a failure.
  • The resource is useful for an examination of the emergence of the Chartist movement during the crisis of 1831-32 prior to the passing of the Reform Act, which gave the middle class, but not the working class, rights to the parliamentary system. This was further fuelled by the New Poor Law of 1834, which was regarded as draconian and an attack on the working class.
