This interactive map is about the evolution of the concentration camp complex at Auschwitz in Poland. It outlines the racial and biological basis of Nazi persecution, and traces the development of the camp established at Auschwitz. A series of maps and explanatory text describe: German territorial expansion by 1942; anti-Jewish policy from the 1930s; major ghettoes established, 1939-44; mobile killing units, 1941-42; the camp system, 1933-45; extermination camps from 1941; and transit routes, 1942-44. A further nine screens detail the elements of the Auschwitz complex.

  • This interactive map is valuable for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 10 relating to an examination of significant events of World War II including the Holocaust. It consists of a large amount of material showing the gradual evolution of Auschwitz from a labour camp to an extermination camp, reflecting the development of Nazi ideas and values about racial and biological purity.
  • The interactive map is valuable for an investigation into the scale and significance of the Holocaust. Students analyse material about Auschwitz to construct a brief history the camp.
  • This interactive map is useful for the development of historical skills. Students use chronological sequencing to demonstrate the relationship between Nazi expansion and occupation of countries and their developing ideas about the future of Jews, Gypsies and other so-called biologically impure people.
