This online resource offers a comprehensive overview of the many forms of religion in late imperial China. It includes a detailed overview of religion under the following four headings: Religion in China: an overview; Popular religion and beliefs; Institutional religion: the three teachings; and Religion, the state and imperial legitimacy. It features class materials consisting of primary source readings with questions and weblinks to online seminars, essays, newspaper articles and art exhibitions. Also included are suggestions for further reading, authentic photos and illustrations, and topic introductions specific to teachers and students.

  • This resource is useful for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 7 relating to the beliefs, values and practices of Chinese society, in particular funerary customs. It provides a comprehensive description of Chinese beliefs about the afterlife as well as ancestor worship, funerals and memorials. The resource explains the importance of mortuary rites and sacrificial rites and the practices associated with these customs.
  • This resource is valuable for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 9 relating to the influence of nationalism as a key idea in China around 1900. It includes information about the new intellectual elite who challenged the traditional beliefs of the Chinese, the growth of anti-imperialist and nationalistic military and intellectual groups and the end of the Qing dynasty.
  • This resource is valuable for the development of historical skills at the year 9 level relating to historical sources. Students explain the contextual significance of the scrolls and identify the purpose of them for the emperor.
