Teacher guide Blue marble matches - activity

TLF ID M011995

This is a resource for educators outlining practical activities that explore geological processes on Earth and how to identify geological features in images. It demonstrates how scientists use the Earth to gain a better understanding of other planetary bodies in the solar system through examining images of their geological features. Identification of geological features on Earth formed by wind, water, impact (meteor) and volcanic action are explored. These skills are then transferred to identifying geological features on other planetary bodies. The practical activity can be scaffolded into a range of learning activities according to student learning levels and curriculum focus.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for the content description in year 6 science that refers to sudden geological changes or extreme weather conditions affecting the Earth's surface.
  • This is a valuable resource for the content description in year 7 science that covers students summarising data from the secondary sources, in this case geological images and maps, and using scientific understanding to identify relationships and draw conclusions.
  • This is a useful resource for the year 10 science content description about global systems involving interactions between the biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining the achievement standard in year 6 science through learning about the effect of natural events on the Earth's surface and matching geological images to surface features.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining the achievement standard in year 7 science through acquiring skills in processing and analysing data, and developing an understanding of Earth's resources and how they are affected by natural events. Science understanding and science inquiry skills are effectively covered through the activities in this resource.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining the achievement standard in year 10 science through exploring the interactions and cycles within and between the Earth's spheres. The activity provides introductory information on Earth systems to give students a brief overview of how the interaction of different systems plays an important role on Earth and possibly other planetary bodies.
