It contains: seven background information sheets; three lesson plans for whole-class discussions to introduce particular topics connected to tombs and the goods found within them; an inquiry-grid worksheet for gathering information about these goods; and three follow-up lesson plans for activities that extend the content. The resource is part of the Staff room, a set of teacher support materials that accompany the British Museum's Ancient China website.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is an excellent teacher resource for the China option in the Asian world depth study in the year 7 history curriculum, particularly for the content descriptions that refer to the significant beliefs, values and practices of Chinese society in relation to death and funerary customs and to the role of significant individuals in ancient Chinese history. The information sheets provide useful background information for teachers, particularly those about the tomb of Fu Hao and ancestor worship.
  • Although written for students aged 9 to 11, the lesson plans are highly suitable and potentially engaging for year 7 students. They provide numerous opportunities for students to develop and extend their historical skills and are particularly relevant for the content descriptions that refer to locating, comparing, selecting and using information from a range of sources as evidence, and to developing descriptions and explanations that use evidence from a range of sources.
  • The activities suggested in the resource may contribute to students attaining almost all the elements of the year 7 history achievement standard, especially those that refer to: describing the effects of change; describing events and developments from the perspective of different people at the time; explaining the role of groups and the significance of particular individuals in society; examining and interpreting historical sources; and developing historical descriptions and explanations.
  • The resource is also relevant for the Asia cross-curriculum priority, especially its organising idea about the diversity of the peoples and countries of Asia in ethnic background, traditions, cultures, belief systems and religions.
