Teacher guide Bushfire education: what is fire safety

This is a teacher resource containing a lesson plan that focuses on safety, with guidelines for two class discussion topics: Helpful fires, dangerous fires; and Who keeps us safe from bushfires? The lesson plan includes suggestions for activities and props that will encourage awareness of the importance of fire safety. High-quality photographs that can be used to assist the discussions are provided. This resource is part of the Bushfire Education website developed by Education Services Australia on behalf of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

  • This is a useful resource for year 1 geography, particularly the content description for Geographical Knowledge and Understanding referring to the constructed, managed and natural environmental features of places, how they are changing and why they need care.
  • This resource is also useful for the content descriptions in year 1 Geographical Inquiry and Skills referring to presenting observations and ideas using a range of communication forms, such as oral or role play, and reflecting on their understanding about the features of places and connections with places.
  • The resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standard in year 1 geography referring to categorising distinctive environmental features of places and reflecting on what they have learnt to draw conclusions and predict outcomes.
