Dataset Data in Gapminder world

TLF ID M012538

This resource is a dataset providing data for a number of indicators of development over time for more than 200 countries. The indicators fall into the following categories: population, health, economy, environment, work, infrastructure, energy and education, with over 500 sets of data in total. Each set of data can be downloaded, viewed online or displayed as a scatter plot via a link to Gapminder world. The scatter plot has income per person as the default variable on the horizontal axis, with the data for the selected indicator displayed on the vertical axis; the time frame varies within the range from 1800 to 2011.

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for year 6 geography, particularly for the content description in Geographical Knowledge and Understanding that refers to the world's economic, social and cultural diversity. This resource would also be useful for the content description in year 6 Geographical Inquiry and Skills referring to interpreting and comparing information and representations using spatial technologies and qualitative and quantitative methods including comparisons of places, to identify patterns and trends and to draw conclusions.
  • This is a useful resource for the Geographies of human wellbeing unit of study in year 10 geography. It is of particular use for the content description that refers to the different concepts and ways of measuring and mapping human wellbeing and development, and how these can be applied to measure differences between places globally and over time.
  • This resource would also be useful for the content descriptions in year 10 Geographical Inquiry and Skills referring to: interpreting, analysing and evaluating geographical information, using spatial technologies and qualitative and quantitative methods to identify spatial associations, explain patterns, trends, cause and effect relationships, develop reasoned conclusions, draw inferences and predict outcomes; and collecting and organising relevant geographical information from a range of primary and secondary sources.
  • This is a useful resource that supports the Statistics and Probability strand of the mathematics curriculum for years 6 and 10. It is of particular use for the content description in year 6 about interpreting and comparing a range of data displays; and in year 10 about using scatter plots to investigate and comment on relationships between two numerical variables.
  • This is a useful resource that supports the Historical Skills strand of the history curriculum for years 9 and 10. It is of particular use for the content descriptions about: identifying and locating relevant sources, using ICT and other methods; and processing and synthesising information from a range of sources for use as evidence in a historical argument.
  • The resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standard in year 6 geography referring to describing the diverse environmental and human characteristics of places, describing simple spatial patterns and trends and comparing and interpreting information to identify patterns and trends and to draw conclusions; and in year 10 geography referring to explaining spatial patterns and trends across a range of scales and contexts, and interpreting, analysing and evaluating geographical information from a range of sources.
  • The resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standard in year 6 maths referring to interpreting and comparing a variety of data displays; in year 10 maths referring to describing statistical relationships between two continuous variables; and in years 9 and 10 history referring to interpreting, processing, analysing and organising information from a range of secondary sources and using it as evidence to answer inquiry questions.
  • The resource also supports the general capability of numeracy.
