Teacher guide Life expectancy PowerPoint

TLF ID M012539

This teacher resource is a PowerPoint presentation designed to address common student misunderstandings about life expectancy. It emphasises that life expectancy is an average, that most people live for much longer or shorter than their life expectancy and that, when life expectancy is low, it is mostly because of a very high child mortality rate. The presentation makes use of graphs comparing life spans of five newborns in the African country of Burundi and five newborns in Sweden to illustrate that those who survive the dangers of childhood generally live to a relatively old age, even in countries with very low life expectancy. The PowerPoint presentation is accompanied by a teacher guide and also a PDF with very useful detailed background information about life expectancy.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for year 6 geography, particularly for the content descriptions in Geographical Knowledge and Understanding that refer to the world's economic, social and cultural diversity. This resource would also be useful for the content description in year 6 Geographical Inquiry and Skills referring to interpreting and comparing information and representations using spatial technologies and qualitative and quantitative methods including comparisons of places, to identify patterns and trends and to draw conclusions.
  • This is a valuable resource for the Geographies of human wellbeing unit of study in year 10 geography. It is of particular use for the content descriptions that refer to: the different concepts and ways of measuring and mapping human wellbeing and development, and how these can be applied to measure differences between places globally and over time; the reasons for spatial variations in human wellbeing globally; and the trends and issues in development using a case study from a developing country or region in Africa, South America or the Pacific Islands.
  • This is a useful resource that supports the Statistics and Probability strand of the mathematics curriculum for years 7 and 8. It is of particular use for the content descriptions in year 7 about: calculating mean, median, mode and range for sets of data and interpreting these statistics in the context of data; and describing and interpreting data displays using median, mean and range; and in year 8 about investigating the effect of individual data values, including outliers, on the mean and median.
  • The resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standard in year 6 geography referring to describing the diverse environmental and human characteristics of places at different scales and contexts, describing simple spatial patterns and trends and comparing and interpreting information to identify patterns and trends and to draw conclusions; and in year 10 geography referring to explaining spatial patterns and trends across a range of scales and contexts.
  • The resource can also contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standard in year 7 mathematics referring to calculating mean, mode, median and range for datasets; and in year 8 mathematics referring to explaining the effect of outliers on means.
  • The resource supports the general capability of numeracy.
