  • This is a resource of great value for the Responding strand of the Visual Arts curriculum in upper-primary and secondary schooling. This is especially so for content descriptions that may refer to students responding to the visual arts works of Australian artists and considering the broader historical and cultural contexts of their work. The resource gives students the opportunity to examine the painting closely and to hear and read a senior curator's response to the work.
  • 'Northern theme', 1973 has significant value when exploring and interpreting the meaning of artworks, and how artists deconstruct physical references such as the landscape in order to build abstract compositions. Artists such as Carol Rudyard (1922-) adopted international ideas about the use of colour and space. In the painting, she employs a complementary colour harmony to intensify the relationships among the elements, and the intense pink spaces tonally pulsate as the viewer's eyes move across the surface.
