Teacher guide Climate education guide, activity 3: trees and carbon

TLF ID M012743

This is a teaching-learning resource containing teaching strategies and a student activity about the role of forests as carbon sinks and the effect of tree size on the capacity to store carbon. The resource has six tabs, five of which are relevant. The first tab provides information about the importance of forests in storing carbon and the second provides an activity in which students measure trees in order to estimate the amount of carbon stored. The third tab provides two enrichment activities, the fifth an assessment task, while links to two resources that support the activity are provided in the sixth tab.

Educational value
  • This resource is of some value in targeting the year 10 science content description about the reliance of global systems on interactions involving the Earth's spheres, and the year 10 geography content description about the challenge to sustainability posed by environmental changes caused by humans. It is also of some value for the sustainability cross-curriculum priority organising idea about the importance of the biosphere in sustaining life on Earth. The introductory information and student activity can be used to support a discussion about the role of forests as carbon sinks.
  • This resource is of some value in targeting the year 10 science content description about analysing data, including describing relationships between variables. In the activity provided, students analyse a table of data to assess which dimension - height or circumference - has a greater effect on the amount of carbon stored in a tree, and consider how the measured trees compare to trees in other forests around the world.
  • This resource may be of some value in targeting the year 10 science content description about evaluating conclusions and describing ways to improve data quality, and in contributing to students attaining the achievement standard in year 10 science.
