This is a teaching resource about the cultural, economic and artistic exchanges promoted by the Silk Roads in China. It gives step-by-step advice to teachers about how their students could be encouraged to make personal literary responses to images of artefacts from a hyperlinked online exhibition, 'Monks and merchants: Silk Road treasures from northwest China, Gansu and Ningxia, 4th to 7th century'. The online exhibition has ten sections, including Heavenly horses and Merchants and currencies. Each section includes several artefacts and information about their historical context.

Educational value
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standards in year 7 history. It provides information and images related to the beliefs, values and practices of Chinese society, with a particular emphasis on the spread of Buddhism. The historical information and images in the Monks and merchants website provide views of life along the Silk Roads and represent a convergence of cultures, religions and artistic styles. The establishment of important trade routes and monastic communities led to the production of many featured ritual objects.
  • It is also relevant to the cross-curriculum priority Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia, particularly the second organising idea that interrelationships between humans and the diverse environments in Asia shape the region and have global implications.
  • The resource may be of some use in relation to the general capability of intercultural understanding. There are references to selected images and objects that have significance to a variety of cultures and beliefs linked to Buddhism.
