Their stories are told through written accounts, photographs and video clips, each relating to a different period within the timeline.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource has strong relevance to the year 10 history curriculum. It uses the personal stories of Indochinese migrants to illustrate the significance for Australia of a world event: the political upheaval and unrest caused by governmental change during the years of the Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge regime within Cambodia, and the role of Australia in the Asian refugee era.
  • Students will find this resource useful for detailing personal migration experiences and illustrating how the scenario for these experiences, and the stories of the individuals themselves, have been influenced by the globalising world, the growing issue of conflict and refugees, and the dynamic nature of Asia during the latter half of the 20th century.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining the achievement standard for year 10 history. It illustrates the impacts of significant events (in this case, the Pol Pot administration in Cambodia) and how in a globalised world such events have had an impact in Australia.
  • This resource has strong relevance to the cross-curriculum priorities within the history curriculum, in particular to Australia and its engagement with Asia. It refers to the role of Australia as a destination for displaced and refugee citizens within Asia, and the disparity between First World and developing world nations, as told in the biographical videos on this website.
