Text How we use energy

TLF ID M012901

This resource is a web page that introduces some ways in which energy is used to maintain our current lifestyle and produce consumer goods. It considers the mass production of goods, a brief history of fossil-fuel usage, the energy sources used in Australia and the energy required to produce clean water. Links to relevant chapters from the years 7 and 8 Pearson Science textbooks, and to animated videos, a photo story and an ecological footprint calculator, explore the ideas in greater depth. Other links lead to discussions about more sustainable energy use in the future.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource may be of use for the Australian Curriculum content descriptions in year 7 science about renewable and non-renewable resources, and the role of science and technology in finding solutions to contemporary problems. The links to websites about energy resources, future energy developments and the search for alternative energy sources present more detailed information in a range of formats.
  • The resource is relevant to the sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the fifth and sixth organising ideas about individual and community actions for sustainability and the sustainability of ecological and economic systems through informed action. The video on the history of fossil-fuel usage identifies the impact and consequences of using this energy resource, and the ecological footprint calculator may lead students to a more informed understanding of the consequences of an individual's actions.
