Text About bioenergy

TLF ID M012966

This resource is a web page that includes information on clean energy sources including generating electricity using waste organic matter (biomass). Using sugar-cane offcuts as an example, the resource gives a brief description of one way in which organic waste can be used to generate electricity. It defines the terms bioenergy, biomass and carbon neutral and provides information about the current and potential use of biomass in Australia and around the world.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum content descriptions in year 6 science about using energy from a variety of resources to generate electricity, and in year 7 science about some of the Earth's resources being renewable and others non-renewable. It describes how waste organic matter is used to generate electricity.
  • The resource can contribute to students attaining the elements of the year 6 achievement standard about describing how energy can be transformed from one form to another, and the year 7 achievement standard about the way in which resources are cycled through the Earth's systems and how they can be used sustainably. The benefit of using waste material for electricity generation rather than sending it to, and increasing the volume of, landfill is introduced.
  • The resource is relevant to the sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the eighth organising idea about designing actions for sustainability. It outlines the potential savings in carbon dioxide emissions that can be achieved by using bioenergy.
