Teacher guide Reading the landscape

TLF ID M013135

This is a unit of inquiry consisting of 12 learning sequences for year 1 in the English for the Australian Curriculum resource. Each learning sequence contains a series of resources, suggested activities to carry out with students and a post-activity reflection. This unit of inquiry will allow students to develop their understanding of the key elements of a sentence by investigating the geographical world around them, with a particular focus on using visual images. The unit will also give them opportunities to increase their geographical awareness by observing and studying a range of information and narrative texts.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource has multiple elaborations in sequences for year 1 content descriptions across the Language, Literature and Literacy strands and sub-strands of Australian Curriculum English, and for the Place, Space and Environment sub-strands within the Geographical knowledge and understanding strand of Australian Curriculum Geography.
  • The resource has activities and tasks supported by interactive worksheets within and across sequences. Assessment tasks include a key summative assessment task for students to demonstrate their understanding of the three elements they have been using to construct a sentence or phrase, and a second assessment task to construct two dioramas of contrasting landscapes depicted in the book 'Mirror' by Jeanie Baker. Links to relevant Curriculum content descriptions are provided for activities within sequences, summarised in a table format with links to elaborations in unit content and are mapped on the website in overview tables for each unit, along with links to sequences for Cross-curriculum priorities and General capabilities.
  • The resource will help students attain the achievement standard for year 1 in which students create short texts for a small range of purposes; and when writing, provide details about ideas or events.
  • The priorities of Sustainability and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders histories and cultures are evident in some sequences. The resource draws heavily upon the Literacy, Critical and Creative Thinking and Information and Communication Technology areas of the General capabilities, and texts used in this inquiry will provide an opportunity to engage with the capability of Intercultural Understanding.
  • The teaching sequences within this resource refer to or are based upon the texts 'Patterns of Australia' by Bronwyn Bancroft; 'Are We There Yet?' by Alison Lester and 'Why I love Australia' by Jeannie Baker.'
