This is a mini-guide and linked game to the use of tones in Chinese. The mini-guide uses Pinyin accompanied by Chinese audio and a simple explanation of each tone and how it is produced. The resource explicitly explains what tones are, how many tones are used and why they are important to Chinese. The linked tone game practises the skills of identifying tones in Chinese and is set to play at three different levels: easy, medium and hard. Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for students in the Years 7-8 band who are just beginning their study of Chinese following the Second Language Learners' Pathway curriculum. The mini-guide will help them learn about tones in Chinese and is useful for content descriptions that refer to the systems of language. The tone game gives students an opportunity to practise their listening skills and interpret meaning from words they listen to.
  • This resource may be valuable to students in the Years F-4 and 5-6 bands who have begun their study of Chinese in the early years of schooling. Teacher instruction and support will be required for young learners using the mini-guide, and the game might be a valuable extension for students who already have a good grasp of tones. In addition, early childhood and primary teachers working with a specialist teacher of Chinese may find the mini-guide a useful source for information about tones.
