TLF ID M013191

This is a mini-guide with linked games to the use of Pinyin in Chinese. The resource describes what Pinyin is and why it is used in Chinese as well as an explanation of the use of consonants and vowels. The mini-guide makes comparisons to letters and words used in English to assist users with their pronunciation of the Pinyin. There is a link to another mini-guide on the use of tones in Chinese as well as a link to two games that practise listening to tones in Chinese and stroke formation in character writing. This resource is part of the Chinese Language Learning Space website. Please visit www.lls.edu.au for more Chinese resources.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for students in the Years 7-8 bands who are just beginning their study of Chinese following the Second Language Learners' Pathway curriculum. It is particularly useful for learning correct pronunciation of Pinyin in Chinese and is suitable for content descriptions that refer to the systems of language. The linked tone game gives students an opportunity to practise their listening skills and interpret meaning from words they listen to. The character game is useful for seeing characters with the correct corresponding Pinyin and practising the formation of characters through stroke order.
  • The resource is of value to students in the Years F-2, 3-4 and 5-6 bands who have begun their study of Chinese in the early years of schooling. Additional support will be required for the younger learners using the mini-guide as the literacy development of the students in each of the bands will need to be taken into account. The resource is of great value to students who already have an understanding of the use of tones and pronunciation of Pinyin and who can recognise characters in Chinese for additional extension.
