This is a unit of inquiry made up of 12 learning sequences for year 9 in the English for the Australian Curriculum resource. Each learning sequence contains a series of resources, suggested activities to carry out with students and a post-activity reflection. This unit gives students experiences of listening to, viewing and reading the life stories of a range of diverse individuals including an Aboriginal artist, a local environmental activist, a rollerblader, a triplet and a street kid.

  • This resource has 142 specific elaborations in activities and tasks in sequences for year 9 content descriptions across the Language, Literature and Literacy strands and sub-strands of the Australian Curriculum: English.
  • The resource contains a range of activities and tasks, supported by worksheets, with two rich assessment tasks; to carry out a critical analysis of a life story and to research, compose and share a short life story. Links to relevant Curriculum content descriptions are provided for activities within sequences, summarised in a table format with links to elaborations in unit content, and are mapped on the website in overview tables for each unit, along with links to sequences for Cross-curriculum priorities and General capabilities.
  • The resource will help students attain the achievement standard for the year 9 in which students analyse the ways that text structures can be manipulated for effect.
  • Sequences within this resource addresses the cross-curriclum priorities Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia and Sustainability. General capabilities addressed Literacy and Critical and creative thinking in all sequences and Personal and social capability, Ethical understanding and Intercultural understanding in several sequences. Opportunities exist in activities and assessments to develop the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability, and Numeracy is generally limited but may apply to sequence 9.
