Teacher guide Patterns

This is a unit of inquiry made up of 12 learning sequences for year F in the English for the Australian Curriculum resource. Each learning sequence contains a series of resources, suggested activities to carry out with students and a post-activity reflection. This unit examines patterns in literature and language, with suggestions for follow-up activities investigating patterns in mathematics and creative arts. In this unit students will read and view a variety of multimodal texts, including print-based texts, an online video and artworks.

Educational value
  • This unit of work has multiple elaborations in sequences for year F content descriptions across the Language, Literature and Literacy strands and sub-strands of the Australian Curriculum: English, and for the Number and algebra and Measurement and geography sub-strands of the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.
  • The resource contains a range of activities and tasks, supported by worksheets across sequences, with a key summative assessment task, supported by an assessment rubric and work samples, to analyse the student's use of the capital letter at beginning of the sentence and full stop at the end, use of onset and rhyme to spell unfamiliar words, and whether or not the sentence makes sense. Links to relevant Curriculum content descriptions are provided for activities within sequences, summarised in a table format with links to elaborations in unit content, and are mapped on the website in overview tables for each unit, along with links to sequences for Cross-curriculum priorities and General capabilities.
  • The resource will help students attain the achievement standard for the Foundation year in which students understand the different purposes of texts
  • The unit of work includes links to the Cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, to exploring the pattern making of Indigenous artists in other parts of Australia, past and present. The unit focuses on the Literacy and Numeracy capabilities. The Information and communication technology (ICT) capability is evident in viewing and teaching opportunities, critical and creative thinking is encouraged through the study of the visual and verbal techniques used and the choices made by the illustrators and authors; personal and social capabilities are encouraged through group work in sequences as students investigate a variety of children's literature and record their observations to share with the class; and intercultural understanding is encouraged through the incorporation of Indigenous children's literature and the study of Indigenous art making techniques.
