TLF ID M013314

This is a web page consisting of an overview and two illustrations of practice on the GeogSpace website, a resource for teachers. The illustrations develop the concept of place into a more complex idea with subtleties of function, and contrasts in settlements between different places. Illustration 1 develops students' knowledge and understanding of places and patterns in Australia. Illustration 2 focuses on the similarities and differences between people in Australia's neighbouring countries by providing short factual paragraphs about children in 16 countries.

Educational value
  • Illustration 1: Making your own atlas develops students' knowledge and understanding of places and patterns by engaging them in a hands-on activity of making a simple atlas of Australia.
  • Illustration 2: Children in different places - a drama activity focuses on the similarities and differences between people in Australia's neighbouring countries by providing short factual paragraphs about children in 16 countries.
  • Students investigate the locations of key places and regions in Australia by completing a practical activity of putting together a set of maps chosen by each student. A number of suggestions are given, including mapping local information about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders' regions. Students can use these as the basis of a talk or dramatisation about the life and location of each child, and then build on and compare the information. The suggested teaching approaches are designed to involve students in presenting information to an audience.
  • Achievement standards of describing the location of places, collecting information, drawing maps that conform to cartographic conventions, and reflecting on learning are covered.
  • The resource supports the general capabilities of Literacy, Numeracy, Critical and creative thinking, and Intercultural understanding. It may also relate to the cross-curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, and Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia.
