A significant local site

• This unit is a valuable resource for the Past in the present description in the year 2 History curriculum. Through the use of visual sources, such as photographs, students develop historical skills as they examine the concepts of 'now' and 'then' by comparing historical and modern images of the same location while considering significant changes in architecture, transport, education and daily life. They document their findings in a range of communications, including a Venn diagram. Students develop their own inquiry questions and use peg timelines to sequence events in their own lives. They respond to the themes of this unit through a range of assessment tasks, including an inquiry into historical objects, recommending features for preservation at their own school, forming conclusions from primary sources and documenting their own examples of 'now' and 'then'.
• The activities in each learning sequence address a different aspect of the year 2 achievement standard and in combination with other evidence gathered during the inquiry process provide the opportunity for a final summative assessment.
