This unit of work focuses on the topic of Federation in the year 6 History curriculum. As well as an overview of the topic, the resource provides teachers with a series of learning sequences to guide students through the topic, and provides numerous images, links to sources and PDF worksheets throughout. Activities support student understanding of the social and historical context of Federation in Australia and include map reading, analysing photographs, illustrations, creating time lines and evaluating written accounts. The resource is part of the AC History units website.

  • This is a valuable resource for the Federation topic in the year 6 History curriculum. Students engage with a range of primary and secondary sources to help them understand the events leading up to Federation, the actions of significant individuals and the long term effects on democracy and citizenship in Australia.
  • Students develop their historical knowledge and skills by considering a range of perspectives on both the positive and negative aspects of Federation. They learn to build an historical argument by using the inquiry charts included in the unit to consider concepts such as change and continuity. The unit provides many opportunities to assess students on their historical skills, such as construction of timelines, analysis primary sources and response to ideas and themes throught letter writing, drawing diagrams, creating timelines, and writing reports.
