This is a unit of work that focuses on the Ancient World topic in the year 7 History curriculum. It encourages students to examine the role of archaeologists and apply the skills of inquiry to their own research. Through a series of learning sequences, teachers provide students with the case study of Narrabeen Man, an early Aboriginal man, whose remains were found in 2005. Students use this study to consider the challenges of investigating the ancient past. At the end of the unit is an assessment task for students to demonstrate their learning. Educational value
  • This unit is a valuable resource for students studying the Ancient World in the year 7 History curriculum. It is useful in helping students to understand the challenges faced by archaeologists studying the remains of the ancient past. It relates to the Investigating the ancient past depth study in that it focuses on the mystery of 'Narrabeen Man', and the analysis of unidentified ancient human remains in Australia.
  • This unit helps students develop historical skills by providing opportunities to assess sources for realiability and compare expert opinions. It outlines the process of inquiry and takes students through the steps required to begin an investigation, to evaluate evidence and to draw conclusions. At the end of the unit, students do an oral presentation about their findings. This acts as a means of assessing whether students have attained the achievement standard.
  • The unit also encourages students to think critically about how information is gathered and interpreted. By engaging with a range of expert opinions on Narrabeen Man, students will be taught to evaluate the effect of context, perspective and opinion when assessing sources for reliability. By the conclusion of the unit, students will have a significant understanding of the value associated with preserving the remains of the ancient past.
