This unit of work focuses on the Angkor / Khymer Empire depth study in the year 8 History curriculum. It provides teachers with a contextual overview and a series of learning sequences and PDF resources to assist them in the delivery and assesment of the topic. It also links to a range of sources and draws on digital mapping technology such as Google earth and 3D recreations of Angkor Wat to engage students and assist in their research. Educational value
  • The resource is relevant for depth study investigation into Angkor / Khymer Empire, in the year 8 History curriculum. Students undertake a series of activities such as examining a range of sources, writing comparative reports, role playing and developing personality profiles for significant historical figures at the time.
  • The achievement standard for this unit can be attained as students compile, sequence, analyse and evaluate their evidence into a class 'Angkorpedia' based on their investigation of the Angkor / Khymer Empire way of life, rise to prominence, cultural achievements and the reasons for its decline.
  • The unit encourages students to improve their historical skills as they broaden their use of historical terminology and use sources to respond to a range of prescribed inquiry questions both as individuals and in groups to encourage collaborative learning. They learn to identify the meaning, context, perspective and significance of sources relating to life in the Khmer Empire.
