This unit of work focuses on the depth study, The Industrial Revolution (1750-1914), in the year 9 History curriculum. A series of learning sequences containing themes and discussion points address technological innovation, daily life, population movement and the long-term impact of the industrial revolution. PDF resources and links are provided, covering a range of case-studies, accounts, artworks and other sources, to assisit students in developing their historical skills and knowledge and understanding. The unit concludes with an essay assessment activity asking students to respond to the key themes and questions outlined in the unit. The resource is part of the AC History units website.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for students to study the nature and significance of the Industrial Revolution in the year 9 History curriculum depth study. Throughout the learning sequences provided, students examine representations of the Industrial Revolution in accounts, data, academic articles and prose and poetry and evaluate and analyse their findings. This variety of sources also assists students' literacy skills as they are introduced to a range of new terminology.
  • Students can attain the achievement standard for year 9 through completion of activities relating to examination of cause and effect and significance of events long and short term, through compilation of timelines, interpretation of data tables and the assessment task asking students to write an interpretive essay, discussing, analysing and evaulating their research.
