Learning objects Difference Differently: ways of seeing

TLF ID M013363

This is a resource with four related sets of student activities that explore how individuals' cultural, religious, and/or social backgrounds shape their perceptions about people, places, ideas and texts. It uses examples to explore how and why people interpret images or objects differently. It looks at multiple perspectives, exploring the different ideas that people have about the meaning of home and about social issues in the community. It includes video, quizzes, writing and reflection tasks, discussion questions and links to a teacher guide.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the three strands of English at years 5 and 6. It is particularly useful for the Literacy content descriptions at both years that focus on interpreting, analysing and evaluating, as the resource involves analysing and comparing images, videos and a news article to identify multiple perspectives. It is useful for the Literature strand content descriptions about literature in context as the first two activities present texts that highlight different cultural and religious perspectives.
  • It has considerable value for the general capability of intercultural understanding. All four resource activities explore cultural and/or religious perspectives so are relevant to the first organising element about recognising and respecting cultures. Each activity also looks at multiple perspectives, so supports the second organising element in this regard. As the four activities raise personal perspectives and self-awareness, this resource also develops personal and social capability. Its focus on Australia's cultural and religious diversity relates well to the cross-curriculum priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures and Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia.
