This is a compilation of five teaching sequences about every child's basic needs and human rights. It can be a resource for learning about how people live in places, reasons why places are special or important to people and how basic needs are met in places. The section on children around the world having similar needs using the UNICEF photo essays explores places people live in and belong to, and the features of these places. It uses stories, digital texts and images to engage students in collecting, recording and representing geographical information.

  • This is a valuable resource for the foundation inquiry area 'People live in places'. It is relevant to the content description about how people live in places around the world, the reasons places are important to people and how places provide people with their basic needs. The investigation of UNICEF photo essays and the story For Every Child, The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in Words and Pictures contribute to teacher's inclusion of the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard for the foundation year Geography. It helps them recognise the features of familiar places and give reasons why places are important to people. It assists them respond to different sources and represent features of places in a model, picture, painting or sentence.
  • It is also relevant to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organizing idea that world views that value diversity and social justice are essential for achieving sustainability.
  • The resource may be of some use in relation to the intercultural understanding general capability. There are resources and links to diverse places and peoples.
