This is a compilation of six teaching sequences about food. It includes sections on foods eaten and the experiences of people in other countries; food security; staple foods; food insecurity; rice; and food security issues in selected countries. The sections on rice include information about the importance of rice for food security; rice production techniques, and a model of a mill used in Vietnam for grinding rice into flour and a range of rice products. The resource also includes links to digital maps and information, photos, hands-on activities and case studies. Countries of the Asia region are investigated to gain understandings about how food security is being tackled with support from other countries.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for inquiry in the year 5 Geography curriculum. It is particularly relevant to the content description about the influence of the environment on the human characteristics of a place. The section on connections between factors and the different aspects of food security are important for this content description. The investigation of environmental, political, economic and cultural factors affecting the provision of food security contributes to inclusion of the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in year 5 Geography. It helps them describe the environmental and human characteristics of places, identify patterns in the characteristics of different places and the range of factors that influence these characteristics and identify changes that result from the interaction between people and environments and explain how these changes affect people and places.
  • It is also relevant to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organizing ideas that world views that recognise the dependence of living things on healthy ecosystems, and value diversity and social justice are essential for achieving sustainability; and action for a more sustainable future reflect values of care, respect and responsibility, and require us to explore and understand environments.
  • The resource is of use in relation to the intercultural understanding general capability. There are visual and digital texts and links to diverse places, peoples, cultures and environments.
