This is a compilation of four teaching sequences about what life is like for children in different parts of the world. It includes sections on inclusion and opportunity; children's rights; the educational rights of girls; the participation rights of young people; and human rights. The section on the educational rights of girls includes case studies from Pakistan and Mozambique; investigates barriers to and opportunities for equal access to education; describes activities aimed at improving opportunities for girls; and includes the preparation of a budget to provide education for 1000 school-aged students. The resource includes links to images, videos and case studies.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the year 6 geography curriculum in its exploration of the diversity of life experiences for children in different parts of the world. It is relevant to the content description about the world's cultural diversity. The information about what life is like for children in different parts of the world and the situations affecting them offer knowledge for understanding inequalities and cultural diversity between countries.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard for year 6 geography. It helps them describe the diverse human characteristics of a range of places, describe patterns, relate these to the location and character of places and identify and explain similarities and differences between places.
  • The resource is also relevant to the Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising idea that the peoples and countries of Asia are diverse in ethnic background, traditions, cultures, belief systems and religions.
  • With its focus on educational opportunities for girls, children's rights and participation rights of young people globally, it is also relevant to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising idea that the sustainability of ecological, social and economic systems is achieved through informed individual and community action that values local and global equity and fairness across generations into the future.
  • The resource is relevant to the Intercultural understanding general capability. It encourages thinking about the lives of girls in Pakistan and Mozambique, and the role education can play in empowering them to have a sustainable future.
