TLF ID M013706

This is a compilation of five teaching sequences about refugees. It includes sections on factors leading to people being forced to leave and seek safety; refugees and asylum seekers; life in a refugee camp; statistics about refugees worldwide; Myanmar refugees; and how a number of international support programs are empowering people in refugee camps to help themselves and maintain their culture. It uses digital images and information, photos, videos, maps and a case study to engage students in processing, analysing and interpreting geographical data and information.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the year 6 geography curriculum. It is particularly relevant to the content descriptions about the connections Australia has with other countries, the changes these connections are making to places, and the effect of people's connections with places on their awareness and opinion of places throughout the world. The section on Burmese refugees and the statistical investigations are particularly useful here.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in year 6 geography. It helps them describe the way places are connected at a national and global scale and to explain the influence these connections have on places and people's perceptions of them. They apply this understanding to describe actions that could be taken to address the needs and rights of refugees in Australia.
  • The resource is relevant to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising idea that world views are formed by experiences at personal, local, national and global levels, and are linked to individual and community actions for sustainability.
  • The resource is also relevant to the Intercultural understanding general capability. The activities using scenarios, media texts, and the anatomy of a refugee camp in conjunction with the maps, statistics, graphs and case study encourage an increased sensitivity to and understanding of the plight of refugees and the difficulties they face.
