This is a compilation of three teaching sequences about HIV AIDS. It includes sections on the global distribution of people living with AIDS; the geography of AIDS; information about the disease; factors about its spread, prevention and treatment; its links to poverty and gender issues; and countries where there is a high prevalence of the disease. The section on distribution of the disease introduces a range of maps that include a variety of map projections and views of the world. The resource also includes links to further information, digital texts, maps and data.

Educational value
  • This is a very valuable resource for exploring the Geographies of human wellbeing unit of study in the year 10 geography curriculum. It is particularly relevant to the content descriptions about the different concepts of wellbeing, ways of measuring and mapping human wellbeing, and how these can be applied to measure differences in wellbeing between places globally. The digital maps with varying projections about HIV AIDS in the world are particularly useful here.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in year 10 geography. It helps them investigate how the global distribution of AIDS, its complex nature and impact are interconnected, and to evaluate and explain the interactions between these processes. Students identify the implications of preventative practices, antiretroviral drugs, education campaigns and media communications for the distribution of AIDS. Students apply their understandings about the disease, its impact and preventative practices and design a product to share with others.
  • The resource is also relevant to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising ideas that world views that value diversity and social justice are essential for achieving sustainability; and that designing action for sustainability requires balanced judgements based on projected future economic, social and environmental impacts. The UNAIDS website, one of the links provided, contains outstanding examples of tools to empower people for change, demonstrating that education is the most powerful instrument for bringing about the changes required to achieve sustainable development.
  • The resource is very relevant to the Intercultural understanding and Ethical behaviour general capabilities. The visual and digital resources encourage understanding about the complexity of HIV AIDS issues for the world. They support students learning about the experience of others and provide information about issues related to poverty and gender equality.
