This is a compilation of five teaching sequences about patterns of urbanisation around the world. It includes sections on poverty and wealth and how this affects where people live, correlations between the wealth of countries and urbanisation, living conditions in a range of urban locations, and the issues that impact on children in an urbanised world. It uses videos, websites, images and case studies to engage students in processing, analysing and interpreting geographical data and information. Countries in Asia, South America, South Africa and the Middle East are investigated to gain understandings about patterns of urbanisation and the issues that impact on children’s lives in urban settings.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the Places are for living in unit of work in the year 7 geography curriculum. It may also be of use for the Reshaping nations unit of work in the year 8 geography curriculum. It is particularly relevant to the content description about the influence of environmental quality and accessibility to goods and services on the liveability of places, spatial distribution and change in the context of the human geography. The series of videos in activity 5 are particularly useful to compare and contrast living conditions in countries, and access to and use of places and spaces in areas, and evaluating how this affects perceptions about liveability of places.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in years 7 and 8 geography. It helps them identify factors that support and enrich human life and affect people's perceptions of places in year 7, and explain how interactions within and between processes influence the characteristics of places, create geographical patterns and contribute to change in year 8.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in years 7 and 8 English. It helps them explain issues and ideas from a variety of sources, analysing supporting evidence and implied meaning in year ,7 and interpret texts, questioning the reliability of sources of ideas and information, and select evidence from the text to show how events, situations and people can be represented from different viewpoints in year 8.
  • It is also relevant to the sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the sixth organising idea that the sustainability of ecological, social and economic systems is achieved through informed individual and community action that values local and global equity and fairness across generations into the future.
  • The resource is of use in relation to the intercultural understanding general capability. There are digital resources and links to diverse places, peoples, cultures and environments. These assist students appreciate and interpret different perspectives and to challenge stereotypical or prejudiced representations of social groups.
