Teacher guide Waste matters

This is a compilation of three teaching sequences about the concept of waste. It includes sections on kinds of waste people create, the difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, waste management practices at a community level, and people and organisations working for a cleaner world. It introduces this issue and provides ideas and activities for classroom use. It uses two digital learning objects and three case studies to engage students in processing, analysing and interpreting information.

Educational value
  • This is a resource that may be of some use for the Earth's environment sustains all life unit in the year 4 geography curriculum. It is relevant to the content description about the sustainable management of waste. The section on biodegradable waste and the New Inventors episode are relevant for the content description about understanding how natural processes can break down and recycle some wastes safely, as in composting. The student film by primary students contributes to the sustainability cross-curriculum priority.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard in year 4 English. It provides them with opportunities to create structured texts to explain ideas for different audiences.
  • It is also relevant to the sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the seventh and eighth organising ideas that actions for a more sustainable future reflect values of care, respect and responsibility, and require us to explore and understand environments and designing action for sustainability requires an evaluation of past practices, the assessment of scientific and technological developments, and balanced judgements based on projected future economic, social and environmental impacts.
  • The resource may be of some use in relation to the literacy general capability as students apply their literacy capability when they interpret and create texts for a range of purposes.
