This is a web page consisting of an overview and five illustrations of practice on the GeogSpace website, a resource for teachers. The illustrations relate to the Geographical Knowledge and Understanding, and the Geographical inquiry and Skills strands of the Australian Curriculum: Geography. The five illustrations investigate the causes, impacts and responses to an atmospheric or hydrological hazard with reference to droughts and floods, the nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it by looking at water management in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and an assessment of the liveability of places.

  • Students investigate the causes, impacts and responses of specific atmospheric or hydrological hazards and approaches to water management and the ways in which the liveability of places can be assessed. They are encouraged to develop a range of geographical inquiry skills.
  • The five illustrations provide students with the opportunity to: describe interconnections within environments and between people and places and describe how they change places and environments; identify and describe alternative strategies to a geographical challenge and propose a response, taking into account environmental, economic and social factors. They also have the opportunity to analyse geographical data and other information to propose simple explanations for spatial patterns, trends and relationships, and they draw conclusions based on the analysis of the data and information collected. Finally, students have the opportunity to reflect on their learning to propose responses to a contemporary geographical challenge.
  • The resource supports the general capabilities of Literacy, Numeracy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capability, Personal and social capability, and Critical and creative thinking. The cross-curriculum priority of Sustainability is featured throughout.
