This resource is a series of satellite images of Singapore showing changes from 1973 to 2009 accompanied by a text explanation and a brief history of Singapore from British colonisation in 1819. The images and text together chart changes over time such as the destruction of the original tropical rainforest apart from small reserves such as Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, damming of coastline bays to create freshwater reservoirs, building of ports and expansion of the land into areas that once were sea, the building of Changi airport and the building of the new industrial town of Jurong. The resource includes a link to references.

  • This is a valuable resource for the Reshaping nations unit of study in the year 8 geography curriculum. It is of particular use for the content description referring to the causes and consequences of urbanisation, using a case study from the Asia region. It would also be valuable for the Environmental change and management unit of study in year 10, particularly for the content description referring to the human-induced environmental changes that challenge sustainability. The resource could also be useful for Geographical Inquiry and Skills.
