This is a folk story titled The lion and the rabbit from the Panchatantra, a book that contains a collection of South Asian folk stories dating back at least 2,000 years. The message of the story is that intelligence is power. The story is eight web pages in length and includes text, illustrations, arrows at the top of the resource to turn the pages forward and back, and a home button to return to the beginning of the story.

  • This is a useful resource for the years 6 and 7 English curriculum. It is relevant for the content descriptions about: comparing the ways that language and images are used to create character and to influence emotions and opinions; and investigating how vocabulary choices can express shades of meaning, feeling and opinion. The vocabulary and illustrations depicting the lion as terrible and fierce are useful for both content descriptions here, including the description of the lion as the 'terrible lion' and the illustrations of the large lion standing over the small rabbit.
  • It is also relevant to the Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority, particularly the first organising idea that the peoples and countries of Asia are diverse in ethnic background, traditions, cultures, belief systems and religions. This story is a folktale from the Panchatantra, a book South Asian dating back 2,000 years. The folktales that form the Panchatantra often include a message; the message of The lion and the rabbit is that intelligence is power.
