This is a website providing four activities to develop students' familiarity with three-dimensional shapes, in particular prisms and pyramids. The resource focuses on assisting students to use geometrical language to describe prisms and pyramids, understand their properties and construct geometrical models. The activities cover 3D shape vocabulary, constructing solids using nets, researching pyramid-shaped structures found in world architecture with a focus on Asia, and the Japanese art of origami. The resource includes a glossary of terms accompanied by images and teacher notes with links to additional resources.

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource that supports the Measurement and Geometry strand in the mathematics curriculum for years 5 and 6. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions that refer to connecting three-dimensional objects with their nets and other two-dimensional representations; and constructing simple prisms and pyramids.
  • This resource supports the Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority. It is relevant for the year 6 elaboration about considering the history and significance of pyramids from a range of cultural perspectives including those structures found in China, Korea and Indonesia.
