This is a unit of work for teachers about intellectual property (IP), in particular the concepts of copyright and trademarks. Learning activities within the unit of work involve investigating and making decisions about intellectual property issues for a rock group. The resource has three main sections: Classroom unit - including an overview, the learning objectives and curriculum areas covered; Delivery - including duration, materials required and six worksheets; and Procedure - explaining the sequencing of learning activities and further advice for the teacher.

  • This is a valuable resource for the years 9 and 10 English curriculum. It is relevant for year 9 content descriptions referring to creating imaginative, informative and persuasive texts that present a point of view; and using interaction skills to present or discuss an idea and to influence or engage an audience. Worksheet 2 is useful for both content descriptions. It involves students in a scenario in which they are the manager of a rock group and must respond to issues and questions about trademark, copyright, intellectual property and confidentiality and trade secrets that affect the rock group.
  • It is also a valuable resource for the year 10 content description referring to using comprehension strategies to compare and contrast information between texts and to identify and analyse embedded perspectives. Worksheet 2, titled 'Your first questions, answers, responses and advice', is relevant here. Students use comprehension skills to gather information about trademarks, copyright, intellectual property and confidentiality and trade secrets from worksheets 3, 4, 5 and 6 and then use this information to answer questions on worksheet 2.
