Text Rock, paper, scissors: student guide

TLF ID M014129

This is a student guide about states of matter, the particle model and simple chemical equations. It contains information and hands-on inquiry activities, and is part of a comprehensive curriculum resource that covers Chemical sciences content descriptions in year 8 of the science curriculum. The resource uses the game 'Rock, paper, scissors' as an introductory context and integrates the year 8 strands of Science Understanding, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry Skills in a natural way. The complete resource consists of three parts: the student guide; student digital activities that include a rich array of interactive activities, film clips and notebook questions to assist learning; and a teacher guide that provides an overview of the lessons including worksheets and assessment.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the Chemical sciences content descriptions in year 8 science about states of matter, the particle model and simple chemical equations. Contexts investigated include the use of materials according to their properties, a consideration of the state of slime, separating mixtures, manufacture of rubber products and rust as a chemical problem.
  • The resource is also of value for its activities, which include: how to conduct an experiment to determine if four powders contain the same particles; observing changes in water as it is heated; and using the 'pop' test to detect the presence of hydrogen gas. Students can also find out about the history of the development of the particle model and the changing symbols for the elements of the Periodic Table.
