This is a web resource that provides a student activity about waste reduction with a teacher guide describing the three key aspects of the activity: researching the environmental and social benefits of recycling and home composting and writing a short persuasive piece about reducing the waste sent to landfill; carrying out a waste-reduction activity at home; and presenting a final report on the practical activity. The waste-reduction activity, which encourages students to collaborate with their families to reduce the amount of home waste that ends up in landfill, is explained through stages in a student worksheet. Blank results tables are provided for students to complete.

  • This is a useful resource that supports the Geographical Knowledge and Understanding strand of the geography curriculum for year 4, particularly for the content description in The Earth's environment sustains all life that refers to sustainable management of waste from consumption. It also supports the Geographical Inquiry and Skills strand for year 4. The resource would be useful for the Literacy strand of year 4 English and may also be useful for year 4 science.
  • This resource supports the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority. It encourages students to estimate the amount of waste from their home that is currently going to landfill and to take responsibility for working with their family to reduce this.
