This is a digital resource containing data on various agricultural practices used on Australian farms, and was collected in a 2011-2012 Australian Bureau of Statistics survey. This resource provides information about farming practices including pasture and crop cultivation, livestock and feral animal management, fertiliser use, and water and soil management, and provides spatial variation data of these practices. This resource contains statistical data, graphs, maps and an explanation of the findings. There is a description of the survey scope and sampling, and links to related information and publications.

Educational value
  • This resource is of significant value to the Biomes and food security unit of the year 9 geography curriculum. It is specifically relevant to the content descriptions that look at the distribution of Australia's terrestrial biomes; how these are altered to produce food and fibres through agricultural practices like vegetation and water management; and factors that influence crop yields in Australia including fertiliser use. This resource is also valuable for the Collecting, recording, evaluating and representing substrand in year 9 geography as it provides opportunities for students to collect and evaluate geographical information from graphs, maps and census data.
  • This resource is also of great value for the year 7 Data representation and interpretation substrand of the mathematics curriculum. It is especially relevant to the content description that focuses on obtaining and investigating secondary data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, particularly data relating to non-renewable resources.
