Text Forest Learning: Wood Properties

TLF ID M016066

This is a resource about investigating the properties of wood. Intended for use as one or two lessons for years 7 to 10 students, the resource consists of information and practical activities. Text, still images, tables and formulae are provided about the density and compressive strength of wood from different trees; moisture in wood; shrinkage after felling; and measurement of the strength of wood. Practical activities involve students firstly in measuring and comparing the moisture level in green and seasoned wood samples, recording data and considering the results; and secondly in drawing a basic 3D design of a wood product, selecting and utilising timber properties.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable teacher and student resource for the design and technologies and the mathematics curriculum areas. It is particularly useful for content descriptions focusing on materials properties in both strands (Knowledge and Understanding and Processes and Production Skills) of the design and technologies curriculum in years 7 and 8. Using information and practical activities, the resource comprehensively addresses the properties of timber - an important part of the curriculum's materials and technologies specialisations context.
  • The resource is also of use for years 7 and 8 mathematics, especially for content descriptions about identifying and investigating issues involving numerical data collected from primary and secondary sources and exploring the practicalities and implications of obtaining data through sampling. The use of samples of green and seasoned wood provides an interesting example of sampling as a means of collecting valid statistical data.
