The resource also includes six questions for students, with answers provided, and an example of the value-adding chain for white cypress square posts.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable teacher and student resource for the design and technologies and the economics and business curriculum areas. It is particularly useful for content descriptions in the design and technologies Knowledge and Understanding strand in years 7 and 8 as it addresses three of the four prescribed technologies contexts. The section on emerging markets for nanocrystalline cellulose is of value for the engineering principles and systems context; the section on paper and paper products supports the food and fibre production context; and the wood and timber value chain is relevant to the materials and technologies specialisations context.
  • The resource is also of value for year 9 economics and business. It could form part of an in-depth study about the Australian forest and wood industry and its place in the national and global economy. The information provided in the resource as a whole and in the white cypress posts example in particular is useful in developing student understanding of the economic concept of a value-adding chain.
