A series of activities in which students explore some aspects of spherical geometry in relation to the Earth. The emphasis is on understanding and calculating time differences and distances across the Earth.

Educational value
  • Students investigate aspects of the geometry of the Earth using Google Earth. Time differences and distances across the Earth are calculated both by hand and using spreadsheet formulae. The use of spreadsheets allows students to see the effect of changing variables and to perform multiple calculations efficiently from which they can draw conclusions.
