This is a unit of work about children's multiple identities and the importance of being inclusive and non-discriminatory. Intended for the early years and written with a global education focus, the resource consists of five single- or multi-lesson activities, titled: Celebrating arriving in my family; Multiple identities, I am ...; People and places; I am a girl. I can do anything; and Contributing to community. The lessons involve reading and viewing texts, discussion, and creating recounts, videos and artworks. Some extension activities are also included. The resource provides links to video clips, websites, writing tools, activity templates and a range of other resources about cultural diversity.

Educational value
  • This is a very good integrated unit of work for children in Foundation (F) and years 1 and 2, suitable for either straight grade level classes or multi-age groupings. It integrates aspects of the English and health and physical education curriculums, reflects the Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority and helps children develop the general capabilities of Literacy, Intercultural understanding and Social and personal capability.
  • In the English curriculum, it supports those content descriptions in the Literature and Literacy strands that refer to listening to and responding orally to texts and creating short texts in F; discussing characters and events in literary texts and responding to texts drawn from various cultures and experiences in year 1; and creating short imaginative, informative and persuasive texts in year 2.
  • The unit is of value for numerous content descriptions in the health and physical education curriculum. The second and fifth activities are relevant for content descriptions that refer to personal strengths in F and 1 and 2. The third, fourth and fifth activities support content descriptions about practising personal and social skills to interact with and include others (F) and describing ways to include others to make them feel that they belong (1 and 2). The first activity is useful for the content description about physical and social changes and how families acknowledge them (1 and 2).
  • The resource has considerable value for the Literacy, Intercultural understanding, and Social and personal capability general capabilities. It connects strongly with their organising ideas and learning continuums about comprehending and creating texts (Literacy); recognising and respecting culture, and reflecting on intercultural experiences and taking responsibility (Intercultural understanding); and personal and social awareness (Social and personal capability).
