Educational value
  • This is a valuable integrated unit of work for children in Foundation (F) and years 1 and 2, suitable for either straight grade level classes or multi-age groupings. It integrates aspects of the science, mathematics and English curriculums, reflects the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority and helps children develop four of the general capabilities.
  • The resource is highly relevant for numerous content descriptions in the science and mathematics curriculums. Its theme connects strongly with science content descriptions that refer to living things having basic needs, including water (F) and the Earth's resources, including water, being used in a variety of ways (year 2). The unit's activities, involving estimating and measuring and representing data, connect with mathematics content descriptions that refer to using comparisons to decide which holds more (F), representing data with drawings (year 1), and creating displays of data using lists (year 2).
  • In the English curriculum, it supports content descriptions that refer to identifying events in a text (F); engaging in discussions, contributing ideas, information and questions (year 1); and creating short texts and delivering short presentations (year 2).
  • The resource has considerable value for the Literacy, Numeracy, Creative and critical thinking, and Intercultural understanding general capabilities. It supports their organising ideas and learning continuums about comprehending and creating texts (Literacy); using measurement (Numeracy); inquiring - identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas (Critical and creative thinking); and recognising and respecting culture (Intercultural understanding).
