# Measuring Millennium Development Goals progress

This is a unit of work about progress towards achieving the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals (MDG). Written from a global education perspective, the resource consists of four single- or multi-lesson activities, titled: What do the Millennium Development Goals measure?; Tracking the world's progress; Comparing progress in regions across the world; and Evaluating progress. Student activities include calculating and ordering fractions, percentages, decimals and ratios; completing tables; and comparing progress against the MDG targets and among geographical regions. The resource includes extension activities, tables and links to websites and other resources.

Educational value
• This is an excellent unit of work for the Number and Algebra strand in the year 7 and 8 mathematics curriculum. The MDG provide a compelling social context for content descriptions about: expressing one quantity as a fraction of another; rounding decimals; finding percentages of quantities and expressing one quantity as a percentage of another; connecting fractions, decimals and percentages and carrying out simple conversions. In addition, it connects to the year 7 content description about solving problems involving simple ratios; and the year 8 content description about solving problems involving the use of percentages, including percentage increases and decreases.
• Although geography is not referenced in the unit of work, it is in fact of considerable value for the 'Geographies of human wellbeing' unit of study and for the Geographical Inquiry and Skills strand in the year 10 curriculum. The statistical analysis in the unit supports content descriptions that refer to: the different ways of measuring and mapping human wellbeing and how these can be applied to measure differences between places; the issues affecting the development of places and their impact on human wellbeing; and the evaluation of multi-variable data to make generalisations and inferences, propose explanations for patterns, trends, relationships and anomalies, and predict outcomes.
• The resource is of value for the general capabilities particularly the Numeracy, Information and communication technology capability, and Critical and creative thinking general capabilities. It connects with learning continuums about interpreting and applying proportional reasoning, interpreting data displays (Numeracy); generating solutions to challenges and learning area tasks (Information and communication technology capability); and organising and processing information (Critical and creative thinking).
